The Chakras Explained

Root Chakra (Muladhara)

The first chakra, known as Muladhara, is at the base of the spine. "Muladhara" means root and represents the earth element, connected to feeling stable and grounded in life. Its color is red, reflecting its ties to the earth.

This energy centre relates to your sense of security, family relationships, and feeling at home. When energy flows through the first chakra, you feel stable and connected to yourself and your surroundings.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Root Chakra

When your first chakra is unbalanced, you may feel pain or discomfort, especially in your intestines and lower body. This energy misalignment can show up in different ways, causing a dis-harmony.

Other signs of an imbalanced Root Chakra may be;

Lightheadedness

Feeling danger or uncertainty

Restless

Lacking energy

Rage

Resentment

It's important to notice these signs to help restore balance and improve your well-being.

Aligning your root chakra helps energy flow easily through your body, connecting you to the earth and your environment. This grounding can increase your sense of self and attachment to your home, both physically and emotionally.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

The second chakra, called svadhistana, is associated with the colour orange and is located at the lower belly and inner pelvis. “Svadhisthana” translates to mean one’s own abode.

Your sexual energy and instincts are linked to the Sacral Chakra. Positive feelings like pleasure, joy, and passion arise from here, along with your creativity. This is where your inner divine feminine and masculine reside.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Sacral Chakra

Blocked energy in the chakras can manifest in our emotional, spiritual, and even physical bodies. Physical symptoms of blocked chakras many times occur in the area of the blocked energy center.

When the sacral chakra is out of alignment, you may experience any of the follow:

Chronic low back pain

Ovarian cysts and other reproductive issues

Urinary tract infections

Impotence

Pain during intercourse

Complications with the bladder and kidneys

Other pelvic–lower abdominal issues

Issues with sacral energy can lead to co-dependency or feeling overwhelmed by emotions.

When the sacral chakra is balanced, you can easily access energy for creativity, movement, reproduction, desire, pleasure, and relationships. You can express your needs in relationships, and enjoyment will be important. You'll find it easy to be creative and visualise when your sacral chakra is aligned.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

The navel or solar plexus chakra is found at the navel. “Manipura” means “shining gem of the city” and relates to the element of fire. Its colour is yellow, connecting it to fire and the sun.

It is closely connected to your self-identity. This energy centre relates to self-esteem, purpose, personal identity, willpower, digestion, and metabolism, When energy flows freely here, you gain empowering energy.

To unlock your personal power, focus on the Solar Plexus. By connecting with it, you'll feel more confident and empowered, helping you achieve greater personal and professional success.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Sacral Chakra

When the solar plexus chakra is out of alignment, digestive issues can arise. This misalignment can manifest in your physical body in a variety of ways, including:

Improper processing of nutrients

Constipation

Irritable bowl syndrome

Eating disorders

Ulcers

Diabetes

Issues with the pancreas

Liver disease

Diseases of the colon

As you focus on the solar plexus chakra, be open to understanding power, individuality, and self-identity. Do you feel powerless in any parts of your life? How does that show? If your navel chakra is blocked, you may experience:

Difficulty in self-expression

Aggressive, overly rigid, or controlling behavior

Quick to anger

A victim’s mentality

Neediness

Lack of direction

Full of vitality and life, a balanced Solar Plexus should leave you feeling energised and raring to go.

When you feel balanced, you are confident in your own strength and become empowered. You discover your identity and purpose. Connecting with your purpose helps you understand how you can positively contribute to the greater community.

Heart Chakra (Anahata)

The Heart Chakra, found in the centre of your chest, is the home of your loving and compassionate energy. It is also the point where the lower and upper Chakras meet.

In Sanskrit, “anahata” means unhurt, unstruck and unbeaten. It is the fourth chakra and serves as our centre of love for oneself and others, compassion, empathy and forgiveness.

The anahata chakra is associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy. It is the source of deep and profound truths that cannot be expressed in words.

Activating this Chakra increases self-love and enhances your ability to love and be loved. Caring for this Chakra improves your relationships with yourself and others.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Heart Chakra

Blocked energy can lead to physical issues or illness. The heart chakra impacts the heart, lungs, chest, arms, and hands. If it is not aligned, it can cause poor circulation, abnormal blood pressure, and other heart and lung problems. Additional issues may include lung infections, bronchitis, and circulation difficulties.

Mentally, an imbalanced heart chakra can result in problematic issues, such as co-dependency, manipulative behaviours, feeling of unworthiness, and an inability to trust yourself or others.

When the Heart Chakra is lacking in energy it shows in some of the most intimate areas of your life.

Unprocessed grief

Challenging relationships

Giving love away freely

Out of touch with loved ones

Unable to empathise with others

When the heart chakra is balanced, you will feel love, compassion, and joy, and be connected to the world. You will be open to all life experiences, and challenges, especially in relationships, will feel easier to handle.

An open heart chakra helps us appreciate the beauty and love around us, fostering connections with ourselves, our loved ones, and nature. It also allows us to love and accept ourselves and our bodies fully.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

The Throat Chakra acts as your bodies communication centre. It enables you to express yourself vocally. When it's active, you can confidently share your truth. Balancing this Chakra helps you become a better public speaker and clearly express your thoughts and feelings. It is located in your throat area.

The vishuddha chakra is related to truth, clear communication, and responsibilities.

This chakra is associated with hearing and being heard.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Throat Chakra

Emotional signs that the throat chakra may be blocked are feelings of depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. This may be worsened by being unable to express those feelings.

A blocked throat chakra may make it hard to express yourself. You might feel the urge to say something but struggle to do so, experiencing a lump in your throat or a shaky voice. This issue can lead to a fear of public speaking or difficulty talking to people you know. Sometimes, you may speak so quietly that others can't hear you.

Choosing the right words shows a healthy throat chakra, but it can easily become out of balance. To help with this, take a moment to think before you speak. Consider if your words are kind and needed. Always express your truth!

Other signs of a blocked throat chakra are;

Avoiding telling the truth

Unable to express opinions or feelings

Social anxiety

Feeling unseen

Shyness

Terrified of public speaking

Finding it hard to communicate

Feeling misunderstood

When your throat chakra is open and balanced, you will find that you are not only able to speak fearlessly and with compassion, but you will also be open to listening to and hearing others.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)

The Third Eye is located between the eyebrows, just above eye level. If you feel a heightened awareness, it may indicate that your Third Eye is opening. This Chakra is linked to your intuition and serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. Maintaining its balance can enhance your intuitive abilities and help you connect with your true self.

The Ajna chakra relates to light and clarity. You hold wisdom inside you, a “light,” that can guide your way. By connecting with the Ajna chakra, you gain a deeper understanding of your surroundings and see more clearly.

The third-eye chakra relates to deep understanding, intuition, and your sixth sense. It allows you to see beyond the physical world and connect with your inner guidance, revealing things as they truly are, without influence from your past or biases.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Third Eye Chakra

The Ajna chakra also connects to imagination and visualisation. When it is balanced, you trust your instincts; when blocked, you may feel narrow-minded.

A blocked sixth chakra disconnects you from your inner wisdom, leaving you feeling lost. This imbalance mainly affects your brain and eyes, making daily life feel stagnant. Without inner guidance, you struggle to see beyond immediate issues and personal views. This imbalance can lead to mental fog, anxiety, or depression.

A blocked third eye chakra can lead to mental and physical problems. You might feel like your mind is always racing. Common symptoms include;

Eye strain

Headaches

Dizziness

Blocked sinuses

Hearing issues

Memory issues

Anxiety

Confusion

Insomnia

Bad dreams

Balancing the third eye chakra improves clear thinking and strengthens your intuition. You'll better understand the events and lessons in your life and see the energy connecting all things.

As you open the Ajna chakra, you start to see reality without the influence of ego, helping you pursue what truly matters more effectively.

Crown Chakra (sahasrara)

The seventh chakra, the crown chakra or sahasrara, is located at the top of the head. “Sahasrara” means “thousand-petaled” and represents a thousand-petaled lotus flower.

This energy centre relates to thought and controls your connection to spirit, universal awareness, wisdom, unity, and self-understanding. Its colour is violet, symbolising spirituality and enlightenment.

It enables you to transcend beyond your spiritual reality and connect with the higher powers. When this Chakra is activated you will become more aware of your presence in this Universe.

Your crown chakra is the places where everything comes together in unity, connecting both your inner world with the entire universe around you – it’s like a universal energy, where everything is one.

Signs of a blocked and balanced Crown Chakra

If your crown chakra is blocked, you may be feeling a bit unstable in your physical body. Some of the physical signs of a blocked seventh chakra include:

Imbalance

Overall poor coordination

Low ability to function physically

Constantly searching for spiritual help to no avail

Inability to see the world from another's perspective

Indecisiveness

Spiritually disconnected

Easily controlled by others

Balancing the crown chakra can bring a sense of calm and mental clarity. You may find it easier to understand your place in the world. Additionally, you might notice a better connection between your body and mind, and feel more in tune with the spiritual realm.

By understanding your body's energy centres, you can enhance your confidence, creativity, and joy in life.
